Another image of Kamakshi, a loving form of Durga, in her garbha griha at the Ramnathi Devasthan, Ponda, Goa.. The utsav murthy, which is taken around the temple in a palanquin, is placed in a niche in the wall behind. Angels appear to have been recruited for decorating the niche. Murthy of Kamakshi before her alankar can be seen in my Dassara greeting from last year.

Adding to the above i want to describe you another temple.
Angalamman temple in Melmalayanoor….
Goddess Mother Parvathi the wife of Lord Shiva took birth on her as hive. The purpose of the birth is to clear Lord Shiva from sin due to severing the fifth head of Brahma and give blessings to all people in kaliyug. The birth took place her before the start of kaliyug. The birth place Melmaliyanoor where the temple is situated. The specialty in this temple is Mother in Angala Amman faces north while blessing devotees. Malayanoor is a part of Dhandakarunyam where Aroop (shapless) Angalaamman lies.
Once a fisherman Dasan with 3 sons (Veeran, sooran, Ukiran) went for fishing in Malayanoor Lake. Parvathi suggested to them that catch should be devoted to her only. Veeran wanted to oblige. But he was sorry for having damaged net. Angala Amman gave three stones to Veeran. The first when thrown in to lake it will make the net all right, second stone will result in catching fishes which is to be devoted to mother. Third stone will result in large catch which can be used for sale. Veeran obeyed the commands.
Then Angalamman created a snake hive in palace garden and set there as five headed snake. Fisherman Dasan unsuccessfully tried to doze the hive. Third day Angalamman gave Darshan to all four fishermen. She commanded the fishermen, Due to Saraswathi’s curse i am here. Daily you do Pooja to me. I will save you and your future generations. Accordingly fishermen perform Pooja even now.
King of the place Malai Arasan came to gardens and saw the snake hive temples. He got angry with Dasan’s family. He sent a great force to destroy the snake hive. Mother made everything invisible and gave Darshan to the king, who donated twelve kanni lands for building the temple. People take sand from snake hive as Prasad and got relief from diseases.

With everyone mentioning what they are missing on dassara, I wanted to chime in with my bit ; -).
When I was a little boy, I used to get up early in the morning on dassara, go to the temple with family and on the way back, get jalebis and sev from a street vendor who happened to be quite famous in my area.
Especially on that day, there used to be a huge line in front of his cart with everyone from the area wanting to buy the hot jalebis –
…yeah hot jalebis with warm milk – Ah, how I miss those days

I made a very quick visit to the SV temple yesterday during lunch hour. They were finishing off the homam and I had a fantastic dharshan and prashad (which was a full lunch). The temple has kept a simple but very beautiful golu. Later I visited my friend who had invited me to see her “gombe” especially she showed off her “pattada gombe” to me. Not to mention yummy prashad/ dinner served after pooja was part of the attraction

Oh, I so miss the Balaji Temple; We used to go there sunday morning at 7 am for the suprabhatam; Very few people and it was the best time to sit in front of Venkatraman and be lost in his grandeur; and the suprabhatam is such an exquisite set of poems!
And of course, their prasad is most definitely a full meal! We’d come home and take a nap!
