Arun Shanbhag was raised in Bombay (now Mumbai) and completed his Std X and XII from Bombay as well. He was most fortunate to grow up in a large, multi-generational, extended family and also for the opportunity to spend summers with grand parents in Bhatkal, Karnataka and other relatives in Honavar, Kumta and surrounding areas.

He pursued an Electrical Engineering degree and graduated with a Bachelors in Engineering (BE) from the Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. After a brief stint trying to learn the sitar at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, Arun started his graduated studies in BioEngineering at Clemson University, USA. He focussed on biocompatibility of materials and received his Masters of Science. He continued further studies in cell-material interactions and received his PhD with a minor in Microbiology from Clemson University. He had the good fortune to conduct his doctoral research at Rush Medical University, Chicago under the guidance of leading Orthopaedic surgeons and scientists in the country. Dr Shanbhag has an MBA in Executive Management from Boston University, Boston.

Dr Shanbhag started his academic career as a faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and founding the Biomaterials Laboratory as part of the Musculoskeletal Research Center. He was also a founding faculty member of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr Shanbhag then moved to the Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston as a faculty to lead the Orthopaedic Biomaterials Laboratory. As a translational scientist he advanced clinical medicine withering advances in the basic sciences. He later served as Senior Advisor to the Chairman, Orthopedic Surgery, Mass General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and as Principal of the Innovation Support Center, an early technology accelerator.

Dr Arun Shanbhag is currently the Chief Innovation Officer, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (previously Manipal University), and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology.

Dr. Shanbhag is the recipient of many awards and honors, has contributed over seventy full-length research publications in International journals and book chapters, and given over a hundred presentations at international meetings, and invited lectures. He is the current recipient of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenge Explorations Award. In his various positions, he developed and implemented strategies for Faculty Development, Online & Philanthropy and led clinically relevant basic science and translational research.

At the Innovation Center, Dr. Shanbhag inspires students to follow design thinking principles and develop innovations to solve local problems. The Innovation Center organizes a variety of competitions, hackathons and challenges where students develop interdisciplinary teams, come up with socially relevant innovation, develop working prototypes and are guided on the path of entrepreneurship.

Arun is an avid marathoner having run the Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon, United States Marine Corps Marine and the New York City Marathon.
